portable Shinto shrine known as the Mikoshi.You've probably seen this object many times, a number of Japanese festivals are focused on carrying the Mikoshi. The Mikoshi are kinda like litters (aka sedan chairs, aka palanquin, aka gama), but elaborately designed. And instead of transporting people, the Mikoshi transports the spirit of the diety from the local Shinto shrine through the community - that's why it's paraded around town.
