Fuji Xerox Insect Papercrafts

Fuji Xerox Insect Papercrafts Fuji Xerox presents 10 cute insect papercrafts to promote their DocuWorks file format. They added googly-eyes on some of the bugs to make them look cuter ^^. The 10 bug papercrafts is comprised of 5 beetles, a grasshopper, a praying mantis, a dragonfly, a butterfly, and a cicada.

But before you download the templates (they use the XDW file name extension), I want to tell you that the files are not the regular ones that you're used to seeing (PDF, PDO, JPG). Fuji Xerox is using their own electonic document format called DocuWorks (similar to a PDF file).

You will need to download the free DocuWorks Viewer Light software and install it on your computer in order to see/view the XDW files.

Realistic Cicada Papercraft

Our current favorite for realistic looking papercrafts, Atelier Fare, has a new page up for their latest creation - a Cicada papercraft. The designer actually was going for a Cicada husk but it makes no difference from the actual Cicada. The Cicada husk is the leftover when it is molting (when insects grow in size, it must shed its old protective covering and replace it with a new one). Before you download the pattern check out this very good visual on Cicada molting.

The pattern is not up yet but will be there soon, just bookmark it for now and I'll update you guys on it.

Starship Troopers Papercraft - Warrior Bug

They are known as the Arachnids but are more commonly referred to as bugs, they're the alien race from the movie Starship Troopers. The bugs were portrayed as mindless insectoid beings based on a caste system whose main purpose is to colonize planets. This papercraft is the Warrior bug - infantry of the bug forces.

Realistic Scorpion Papercraft

Androctonus crassicauda or also known as the fat-tailed scorpion. Of course we don't have to be a scientist to figure this one out, it got its name from its distinctly fat tail (metasoma) which contains a very potent venom, full of nasty neurotoxins. Compared to other kinds of scorpions, the fat-tailed is actually moderately sized, they grow up to 10 centimeters. This realistic scorpion papercraft is brought to us by designer Hatayama at the Atelier Fare web site. This papercraft is being prepared for its debut/download, so while you are waiting, check out the other paper models on their site including the realistic Giant Hornet papercraft, a steak, and a turkey.

Realistic Beetle Papercraft

3DPaper is a Korean papercraft (commercial) site that designs and sells proprietary and licensed paper models. They have provided two very realistic insect papercrafts available for free downlaod on their web site.

In case some of you are interested to know where these insect papercraft got their names, the one on the left is a stag beetle (Lucanus maculifemoratus), it's a species of beetle belonging to the Lucanidae family, it has a very large and distinctive pincer that closely resembles stag (male dear) antlers. The other one is a Japanese Rhinoceros beetle (Allomyrina dichotoma) which belongs to the Scarabaeidae Family. Just by looking at its giant horn you can clearly see how it got its name.
