Speed Racer Papercraft - Mach 5
So the Speed Racer movie is coming out next week, I've seen both the domestic and international trailer a few times and I still remain unsold based on it. As a fan of the original anime series (Mach GoGoGo), it's really hard to describe how I feel about the look of this movie without pulling my hair out. There's also a Speed Racer video game tie-in for the Nintendo Wii, maybe that's the reason for the overly done flashy eye-candy. And Mach 6 instead of the Mach 5, hopefully the Wachowski brothers can pull this one off.
Here's the original Speed Racer Mach 5 papercraft from Paper Inside.

Tango-No-Sekku Papercraft
I mentioned on a previous post about Japan's Children's Day festival being held yearly on the 5th of May, and that Boy's Day (Tango no Sekku) is also celebrated during this time. Samurai warrior dolls, armors, swords, and bows are prominently displayed inside houses along with carp streamers flown outside to symbolize the strength and determination of the carp in Japanese folklore.
In connection to the recent posts regarding Tango no Sekku, here is a Kabuto-Kazari (Samurai warrior battle helmet) papercraft and an origami carp streamer.

This dog-shaped robot is the rescue vehicle used by Gan and Ai on the anime series. It's equipped with a bell and a siren. Yatter-Bark doesn't have any cockpit for the Yatterman duo, instead they just hang on to its sides. This papercraft is from the folks at Cubic Character and is not connected to our previous Yatterman post which featured Omotchama, but both are related.

Pokemon Papercraft - Magnemite / Magneton
We're looking at the Magnemite papercraft from designer Kirasu. This Pokemon is a robotic lifeform that looks like an eyeball in a metal socket with a horse shoe magnet on each of its sides. There's three Philips head screws attached to it, two for its feet, and one on top of its head, probably an antenna. It's considered to be an Electrical/Steel type, and just like some of the other Pokemon the Magnemite has an evolved form called the Magneton. Just build three Magnemites and you've got yourself a Magneton. The pattern is in PDO format so you'll need the free Pepakura viewer to open this file. Thanks to the designer for sending it in.

Relax Bear Papercraft - Children's Day
May 5 is Children's Day in Japan, they observe Tango-No-Sekku (Boy's Festival) to celebrate children's healthy growth and happiness. From late April to early May families display brightly colored carp streamers hoisted on a bamboo pole outside their homes called Koi-Nobori, a carp is flown for each son in the family - with the sizes ranging from big (eldest) to small (youngest). Why the carp? the Japanese consider it the most spirited of fish, because of its strength, vigor, and perseverance when swimming upstream.
Inside the house, families display armor, swords, bows, and Boy's Day Dolls (gogatuningyo). The kuma0rila blog has now put up this new Relax Bear papercraft with Relax Bear (Rilakkuma) himself on a carp suit and his friend Korilakkuma wearing a cute red apron of some sort.

I'm seeing some good paper models there that I haven't posted before, starting out with some Legend of Zelda papercrafts, Floormaster from The Wind Waker series and Epona (horse) from Ocarina of Time. Then there's the Super Mario characters like Magic Mushroom, Bob-omb,Koopa Troopa, and many more. Not all the papercrafts are Chokipeta-quality, but they're good enough in their own way. Enjoy kids.
And to Nintendo Co., with all that ridiculous amount of money ($1 billion) that you're raking in from the Wii and DS, couldn't you at least provide us some official papercrafts. The cost of it, wouldn't even put a dent on your wallet.

Kung Fu Panda Papercraft
With a ton of good movies lined up for summer 2008, DreamWorks Animation's Kung Fu Panda is probably one of the most anticpated film for younger audiences, right there with Pixar's Wall-E. The story is about a lazy, slacker panda named Po who teams up with the legendary Furious Five (Tigress, Crane, Mantis,Viper, and Monkey) under the guidance of Master Shifu, to save the Valley of Peace from a villainous snow leopard called Tai Lung.
Here's another great release from HP, the Kung Fu Panda papercraft are cute and much better than they're first try (remember Shrek 3D?) The paper model set includes all of the Furious Five and Master Panda Po. Grab them now and be sure to "Prepare for Awesomeness"

2008 Olympic Papercraft Mascots
The Fuwa or "good luck dolls" in Chinese are the official mascots for the 2008 Summer Olympics being held in Beijing. They were designed by Han Meilin and consist of five members. They are Beibei (blue), Jingjing (black), Huanhuan (red), Yingying (yellow?) and Nini (green) - like other mascots before them, each one represents a color from the five Olympic Rings. I'm not sure about Yinying though, one of the official colors is yellow, but he looks more orange to me. Probably a result of China flexing its muscle again, defiant as always.
The designer calls himself paperpop and makes his home at the cardmodel site (China). He has released the first (Beibei) of the five Olympic papercrafts and would continue to do so on the 24th of each month until all five mascots are done, with the last one being on the actual end date of the Olympic games.
Don't forget to bookmark and come back on the scheduled release dates:
BeiBei - April 24 (Available Now), JingJing - May 24, HuanHuan - June 24, YingYing - July 24, NiNi - August 24.

Earth Day Papercraft - 2008
Today is Earth Day, a day that we call for action to protect our blue planet's fragile ecosystems from our excessive and unrestrained use of its natural resources. I've searched for some Earth Day papercraft or anything related to it but there's not much out there that has good quality to them. These three however, fit perfectly. We start of with Canon's Globe Puzzle papercraft, we've previously shown this one before but its a very good paper model and educational tool that we'll show it again.
Next we go to Italia to our friend Pino's place (Paperpino) for his Earth Relief Globe papercraft, and finally we visit Japan to see the eco-kun papercraft character, it's a mascot for the Kahma Company Ltd. that promotes eco-friendly products - Kahma is a DIY hardware and household goods store, similar to Home Depot or Lowes here in the US.

Video Game Papercraft - PC Gamer
Yesterday, I went to my local Barnes and Noble bookstore to check out a new section on the store that is carrying imported Japanese books, mostly manga, anime, and origami stuff. Sad to say I didn't find anything related to papercrafts. So I went to the magazine section to check out some video game mags and there it was, a (Fallout 3) Vault Boy papercraft staring at me. I quickly grabbed the mag and tried to see what other stuff was in it. The magazine is the PC GAMER HOW TO: The Ultimate Guide to DIY Gaming edition. I went straight to the particular article, they called it "Gaming Papercraft! Time To Test Your Finger Dexterity" - the first one is a simpler version of Portal's weighted companion cube, followed by the Fallout 3 Vault Boy, then a Bioshock Big Daddy papercraft, and finally a Half-Life 2 Gordon Freeman papercraft. The mag also indicates that all the paper models were done in Pepakura Designer. It's not the best of models, but it's good enough for beginners.
I know I'm going to receive a lot of request for a scan, but this one is a no go. The mag is only $10 cheap and its available everywhere, I think anybody interested can afford this one. Pardon the quality of the photos, my camera phone is old.
